Fuss Fridays: a fortnightly list of essentials

 4 ingredients—a rarity these days.

Say hello to Fuss Fridays! Inspired by Tim Ferriss, I'm sharing with you six essentials that I’ve been obsessing over.

Listening:
LÄRABAR: Lara Merriken on How I Built This with Guy Raz. In 2000, Lara Merriken was 32, recently divorced, and without a job when she decided to make energy bars by mixing cherries, dates, and almonds in her Cuisinart. Eventually, she perfected the recipe and launched her company: LÄRABAR. After just two years, the company was bringing in millions in revenue. In 2008, she sold to General Mills, but stayed on to help grow LÄRABAR into one of the biggest energy bar brands in the U.S.

This podcast is brilliant for anyone who is considering breaking out and starting their own brand/products. Listen to it here.

Watching:
Wasted! The Story of Food Waste. Narrated by Anthony Bourdain, this documentary features an all-star cast of chefs, food entrepreneurs, and activists who address the need to fix our broken system in which 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year while people continue to live with food insecurities. It sheds an honest light on modern agriculture and big chain supermarkets, as well as our cultural affinity for “pretty food.” It also highlights the smart, inventive solutions created by industry heavyweights, like former Trader Joe’s CEO Dough Rauch, and chefs like Dan Barber and Danny Bowien. It’s a smart, thoughtful dive into the creative uses of the resources we regretfully throw away.

Idolizing:
Joe Gebbia—designer, entrepreneur, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Airbnb. Joe helped redesign the way the world travels and people connect in more than 190 countries. Listen to his latest episode with Tim Ferriss here, where he delivers the details on his path to Airbnb.

Wearing:
Since launching in 2000, Danish brand Ganni has done wonders for the fashion world with its easygoing aesthetic and cult following. This season, Ganni's creative director, Ditte Reffstrup, has teamed up with Swedish brand Magniberg to create 10 ready-to-wear pieces all revolving around denim. I purchased these yesterday and am so excited for them to arrive!!

Reading:
All Marketers Are Liars by Seth Godin. All marketers tell stories. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche is vastly superior to a $36,000 Volkswagen that’s virtually the same car. We believe that $225 sneakers make our feet feel better—and look cooler—than a $25 brand. And believing it makes it true.

I highly recommend purchasing the audiobook version—not only because it will save you space but also because it is actually narrated by Seth himself. Certain intonation and the way a book is meant to be delivered is generally missed when spoken by someone other than the author—plus for some reason they all sound like Siri...

Eating:
A bit of a naughty treat (though I have one everyday), YouFoodz has invented these protein brownies that literally taste as though you're biting into a gigantic chocolate truffle—if you keep them refrigerated. You can find them here. Thank me later.
